Getting a Grip
Hybrid Meeting - live at the MAC and on Zoom
HERE
Shop-made fittings for holding work on your lathe.
Demonstration - For the March 6th meeting demonstration, long-term member Tom Willing will show his methods for getting a grip on the work without the need for expensive engineered chucks. Tom will show how fitments can be made using Morse tapers, friction spigot drives, cup chucks, and more to accessorize your turning practice. He will also cover use of sacrificial glue blocks. By the time he is done, Tom will have given you a taste for the delightful journey of discovery and invention to be found in shop-made solutions to holding your work on the lathe.
Chucks - Wonderful as Chucks are (I have six), four-jaw scroll chucks can be impractical or totally unsuited for certain fixings on the lathe. It is often quicker, safer, and more accurate to use fixing methods that rely on simple principles of physics, fit, and form.
