Sharpening Skills Hands On Class

Date:  March 10th, Saturday
Location:  Classroom 7, Multnomah Arts Center
Time:  9:30am-1:30pm
Cost:  $50

Instructors:  Tom Willing, Steve Newberry, Mike Meredith

Description:  When a turner approaches spinning wood on the lathe with dull tools that is not only unsafe, but is also guaranteed to give you disappointing results!  As Mike Meredith is fond of saying " a tool that is almost sharp, almost cuts!"  Come to this class to get hands on instruction in sharpening methods and a "chalk talk" overview of what turners need to know. Attendees will see demonstrations by our Club experts on sharpening skews, gouges, scrapers and other supporting tools, AND hands on instruction with YOUR tools. You will leave the class with the essential skills and knowledge to make a difference in your work.  The instructors will address free hand sharpening, the use of jigs such as the Wolverine by One-Way, and the practice of honing as an augment to sharpening at the grinder, including burnishing an edge on scrapers.

Our Club offers this class about every two years, so make this a priority if you are a newer turner.  In Classroom 7, we'll have 3 grinder stations set up, including one with CBN wheels for you to try.  In this 4 hour class, you'll have ample time to practice and receive instruction on how to sharpen for best results. Attendees will not be turning wood in the class, however an instructor may demonstrate effectiveness of sharp tools with wood on the lathe.

Important:

  • Bring your safety equipment - safety glasses and ear protection, and/or respirator.
  • Bring your turning tools labeled with your name on them.  Protect the sharp points and/or carry them in a tool roll up.
  • A Turning Tool Sharpening document has been prepared for your use by our 3 instructors.  It is located on the Class Documents page of the website and may be downloaded.  It will not be handed out in the class.
