This is a unique opportunity to perform a community service and improve your spindle turning techniques. It is also the first time we have attempted a project like this.

Tualatin Valley Fire Department (TVFD) Project – NWWT has volunteered to make 80 “Plugs” for firemen to use at a fire to plug things like sprinkler and other water outlets.  There are 4 different sizes.  The plugs are basically a tapered spindle. We need to make 80 plugs  (20 of each size).

If you are relatively new to turning or turn mostly bowls and never touch your skew, this is a good opportunity to practice for a good cause.

We will supply all the blanks.  You will turn them into cylinders, then taper them into plugs, sand and finish them.  All you need to bring is a spindle roughing gouge, a skew and optionally a spindle gouge.

Depending on the sign-ups, you may share a lathe with one other person.  In the end, it should be a fun day.
