Wood Selection and Processing

When:          June 13, 9:00 – 1:00
Where:         Oregon City (directions sent after registration)
Price:            $50 plus price of wood.
                     $80 for non-members (includes a discounted
                     NWWT membership)
Instructor:   Dale Larson (AAW President)

What: This will be an exciting hands on class that will teach how to read your wood and cut it for a specific project such as bowls, platters, hollow forms and spindle work.  We are fortunate to have Dale Larson (President of AAW) leading the class with a few other experienced turners helping out.  You will leave the class with wood that you have cut for specific projects and an understanding of how to safely use a chainsaw.

Note: you will need to sign up for the class rather than just show up as we need to plan appropriately and send you the detailed directions to the site.

  • Chainsaw safety guidelines, preventing kickbacks, etc.
  • Chainsaw maintenance – sharpening, safety checks, chain maintenance
  • Securing logs for safe cutting in the field
  • Reading the wood before you cut – finding figured wood, reading the grain, crotch, burls, etc.
  • How to make optimal cuts for bowls, platters, hollow forms and spindles
  • Hands on cutting - we will have 2 or 3 stations, each with an instructor where you can cut your own wood.

What to Bring

  • Chainsaw – bring your own or we will have extras to share.  If you bring your own, we will give it a through safety check (don’t forget gas and oil).
  • Eye and hearing protectionRequired for any hands on work – strictly enforced.
  • Wood – you can bring your own wood or order it before the class.  If you want to order wood for the class, please contact Tim Small at wtsmall@centurylink.net.
